State of Florida
The state of Florida is located in the southeastern region of the U.S., being bordered by the Gulf of Mexico, Alabama, Georgia and the Atlantic Ocean. It has a population of 19.32 million people, making it the fourth most populous state. In 1513, Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon named it La Florida, or “Flowery Land”, and it eventually gained statehood in 1845. Famous people born in Florida include Maya Rudolph, Wilmer Valderrama, Norman Reedus and William H. Macy. Florida has more than 30,000 lakes, over 1,000 golf courses and Orlando attracts more visitors than any other amusement park in the United States.
Due to its favorable climate, both central and southern Florida are major agricultural areas. Tourism accounts for billions of dollars annually to the state. The other major contributors to the state's economy include general services, financial services, trade, transportation and public utilities, manufacturing and construction.
