Imagine if all of your devices were connected, and you could control them from your smartphone. The Internet of Things (IoT) aims to do just that, making it possible to check your fridge, change your lighting and adjust your heat before you even get home. But what else will IoT change?<\/p>\n

IoT will provide even more data.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Companies will have to adopt a new way to collect and analyze data. IoT will provide more information for companies, expanding and introducing new roles for data analysts, strategists and customer service representatives. Mary J. Cronin, a professor at Boston College, said<\/a>, \u201cCompanies will have access to an enormous flood of data that all these connected devices will generate. Companies will need to start using IoT data as part of their planning in order to stay competitive and to offer innovative new services and products.”<\/p>\n

Improved location services.<\/strong><\/p>\n

IoT will improve tracking and location services by making them simpler and easier to use. Internet-connected devices will improve employee productivity because workers won\u2019t be wasting time trying to find equipment. Companies can also hook their inventory up to the Internet, making it easier to locate products and fill orders.<\/p>\n

Greener initiatives.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The interconnectivity of IoT will improve energy efficiency through its \u201csmart grid\u201d technologies. IoT will use sensors, meters and other tools to monitor energy usage and facilitate alternative means of power, like wind and solar energy.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll save more time.<\/strong><\/p>\n

With IoT, smartphones will be much more than they are now. Smartphones will act as a \u201cremote\u201d and connect to sensors that you pass throughout your day. For example, instead of walking into Starbucks and waiting in line to order, your smartphone will be able to connect to the sensors and \u201ctell\u201d the barista your usual order. You can then pay for your order through your phone without ever waiting in line.<\/p>\n
